You might have heard about Scientology and its supernatural practices. But did you know that some of your favorite celebs follow the newly-found religion? Scientology is a set of beliefs introduced to the world through the writings of founder L. Ron Hubbard. These beliefs aim at understanding the spirit and claim that there is more to life form than just body and mind. According to the religion, man is an immortal spiritual being, and his experience extends beyond one lifetime. Here are some current Scientology celebrities who have lived by these controversial beliefs.
Giovanni Ribisi

Giovanni Ribisi
Ribisi is a well-known celebrity and one of the most loyal and devout members of the organization. This is not surprising as his family is full of Scientologists. The actor has been vocal about his dedication towards the Scientology Church, crediting the community for helping him find his path. According to a Scientology website, Ribisi has learned to handle various viewpoints and perceptions about work and life overall by different people. He understands that opinions and intentions can be good or bad, but his belief in himself is what keeps him focused on his goals. He says the organization has immensely helped him communicate with himself and others.

It was reported last year, in 2020, that while Ribisi held on to his beliefs, his daughter Lucia left the organization when she started to think that its ideologies were disillusioned. She rejected the institution and its practices completely.

Born into a family of Scientologists, Alanna Masterson started practicing the beliefs from childhood. The Walking Dead actress is known to be openly associated with the Scientology Church and has always defended it during every controversy. She has taken several high-level courses in Scientology and is on her way to rising to higher ranks with every course. In 2018, Masterson completed her Super Power rank in the institution. Still a devout Scientologist, there is no saying that she will stop climbing the ranking order further.

Masterson’s father, Joe Reiache, however, has a different opinion. Now a former member of the church, he has talked about how the controversial religion has created distance between him and his children. He has even called the organization an “evil cult” and criticizes its practices. According to him, the church has brainwashed his kids and, due to his disassociation, the children do not want any part in his life.

An actress, painter, and sculptor, Nancy Cartwright has been a part of Scientology since 1991. She grew up in a Roman Catholic household but changed her association to the Scientology church after being inspired by its ideals. Cartwright is a spokeswoman for the Church of Scientology and has never shied away from her belief. She has gone on record to say that Scientology has helped her expand her career and business as it has given her the tools to understand how administration and technology works.

Famous for her voice of Bart Simpson in The Simpsons, Cartwright once recorded a robocall, partly in Bart’s voice, to advertise an event that the Scientology Church was hosting. Of course, this sparked a lot of controversies. The show’s executive producers had to step in to calm the crowd and bring matters under control, stating that the show officially does not endorse any religious beliefs.

Erika Christensen

Known for her role in Parenthood, Erika Christensen is yet another celebrity to have joined the Scientology Church. However, she was born into the faith. She explains that she adapted to the movement through her parents’ teachings and work. According to an interview done with Dax Shepherd, her co-star on Parenthood, she said, “it’s hard to raise someone as a Scientologist because it’s something that you do, it’s not something that you believe.” Asking on the church’s take on drinking and drugs, she informed that the ideals oppose using drugs, while drinking is still okay.

Christensen surrounded herself with courses about Scientology when she was only 12 and started grasping the concept quickly, which only helped her get closer to the ideology. She revealed that her parents never forced her to go to church but always encouraged her to keep an open mind and explore it when she thought she was ready.

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise
It was in 1990 that this famous Hollywood actor got introduced to Scientology through his then-wife, Mimi Rogers. Cruise was only 28 when he decided to become a member of the church and associate himself with its beliefs. He does not flash about his Scientology following, but it is a known fact that he is a practitioner of the beliefs. In fact, he is also very closely connected to the leader of the Church, David Miscavige.

Every time Cruise has started a relationship, it has been a topic of conversation about whether or not his partners will join ranks with him at the organization. And while Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes (Cruise’s former partners) tried to be a part of that life, it just did not suit them. When Leah Remini made her documentary series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath on the organization, she revealed how the staff addressed the actor as “Mister Cruise.” He was looked upon as the second in command after David.

Jason Dohring

Son of a prestigious Scientologist, Doug Dohring, Jason grew up with Scientology ideals and beliefs. The Veronica Mars star was even found riding the Scientology float in the Hollywood Christmas Parade. So it sure is not a secret that he is part of the organization. He has agreed that his association with Scientology helped his career and expanded his work. Dohring and his dad are not the only family members of this ideology; several others are also a part of the community.

Being a proud member of the Scientology church, Dohring has voiced his annoyance at those who misinterpret the organization’s belief system. According to an interview done with Buddy TV, he was reported saying that those who make false claims or spread rumors and myths about the ideology have not picked up a book to read and understand the organization. The actor has owed his successful career to the faith.

Jenna Elfman

The 48-year-old actress known for her role in Fear the Walking Dead has been a part of the Scientology club for the past 30 years. A devoted member, she has defended the organization on several occasions and interviews, saying that the controversy around the ideology is just “boring” now. But Jeena Elfman says that being a part of the community has helped her with her communication skills and marriage. It is one reason why her love life is still sacred, and none of the partners have ever cheated or broken up with the other.

As being in Hollywood can get hectic, the star actress also mentions that Scientology has immensely helped her maintain sanity on days that have been the most stressful and cumbersome. She goes on to say that anything that works always gets attacked, and that is unfortunate. Elfman firmly stands by the beliefs and principles of the Scientology Church.

Juliette Lewis

In an interview with a US magazine, Juliette Lewis said that Scientology helped her become clearer and that it is the most important thing that has happened to her. The star actress also said she was “no longer stuck in the bottomless pit of despair and apathy.” Lewis rose to fame in her teens through her Oscar-nominated movie, Cape Fear. Since then, she has paved quite a way for herself in Hollywood.

Lewis has been a devout Scientologist to date and talks about how she perceives her religion as a matter of freedom of choice. The actress was born into Scientology and was raised by Geoffery Lewis, a high-ranking Scientologist. She talks about her belief in finding the truth herself and not looking at the government, media, or other people to give her false answers. In her interview with TIME, she stated that there are several misconceptions about Scientology, which is annoying.

Anne Archer

Anne Archer
The Oscar-nominated star, Anne Archer, is a known Scientology celebrity. She has been very vocal about her association with the church and has a son who is also part of the organization. In her interview with The Guardian, she stated that this religion had brought meaning to her life. It has taught her responsibility and brought her sanity in times of need. Her older son is also the spokesperson for the church, while the younger one has chosen not to join the faith.

Anne Archer was not always a part of Scientology. She was originally a Christian Scientist. But in 1975, she and her husband decided to become members of the church. When Leah Remini released her award-winning documentary series, Archer was asked what she thought about the claims made. She conveniently avoided commenting by simply saying that she has not watched it, so she cannot say much.

Catherine Bell

Catherine Bell
The 52-year-old is known for her role in JAG. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Catherine Bell attended an all-girls Catholic school while growing up, but now is a devoted Scientologist. In her interview with Iran Times, Bell states that practicing Scientology has changed her life for good. It has helped her achieve a positive attitude towards her career, relationships, and life overall. She had several friends who were part of the organization. That is what led her to take a couple of courses in the ideology, which converted her completely.

In the interview, Bell said that she looked up to the celebrities who followed this ideology and led an honest and ethical life, which reflected in their work and relationship. She wanted to experience the same. After studying the doctrine thoroughly, she understood that the religion was about doing things and making a life for oneself. It is one of the ideals that inspired her to become part of the organization.

Kirstie Alley

Kirstie Alley
The star has been part of the Scientology following since 1978! But it was recently rumored that she might cut ties with the controversial religion; however, nothing of the sort has been confirmed. Kirstie Alley got famous through the hit TV series Cheers, which ran from 1987-93. But when the spin-off of the show was announced, she refused to sign the contract. According to reports, this was because the spin-off revolved around psychiatry, and participating in it would be like opposing the church. Scientology does not believe that ailments like depression and anxiety exist. Instead, it treats them as a pharmaceutical hoax to sell antidepressants.

Kirstie Alley also runs her own podcast, on which she does talk about her Scientology experience and what people should know about the movement. On occasions, she has even disputed the claims that people are shunned and chased if they leave the faith. Alley says people spread these rumors with the intention of malice.

Danny Masterson

The That 70’s Show actor has been a part of the controversial religion since birth. He was born into the faith and raised by his Scientologist parents, Carol and Peter Masterson, and later by his stepdad, also a member. When asked in one of his interviews to comment on whether there is a God or not, he responded that nobody is worshiped in the religion, calling Scientology the college of the mind. In fact, in all his interviews regarding his association with the church, Masterson has only spoken positive things about the movement.

The actor recently has been in the news due to the LAPD rape investigation against him. One of the accusers, also born into Scientology, reported that the church’s lawyers asked her to take back the case or she would be removed from the community. The story has thrown light on how Scientology influences its members’ lives and actions.

Another That 70’s Show star, Laura Prepon, has been associated with the Church of Scientology since 1999. The famed American actress talks about her experience as a Scientologist very openly and freely. In one of her interviews, she revealed that she got exposed to the ideology when she started dating Christopher Masterson, Danny Masterson’s brother, and started attending more and more gatherings ever since.

Prepon talks about certain practices at the church, one of them being the auditing process. This process includes attending a meeting with an auditor at the church, who understands one’s personal history and works towards removing negative influences that may have impacted the person’s life. Prepon went through this process, too, and, like other church members, believes that the practice helps reach higher spiritual potential. She has stated that Scientology and its beliefs have helped her become more free, which has aided her acting performance significantly.

John Travolta

John Travolta was young and still struggling to make it as an actor when he met an Australian woman, Yvonne Gillham, who inspired and recruited him into Scientology. Travolta joined the movement in the 1970s, and when Scientology and its practices were being challenged, he stood by its beliefs strongly.

Last year, in 2020, John Travolta tragically lost his wife, Kelly Preston, to cancer. And in his statements, he expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the hospital’s procedures and treatments for his wife’s illness, which seemed to have ticked off Scientologist elders. They believe his statements to be an indirect indictment of the church and think he may be breaking up from the movement. This is because chemo and radiation therapy are against the Scientology Church’s beliefs. However, apart from this, Travolta gave no hints of giving up the faith. In fact, he has been a member for about 45 years now.
