While careers take flight with an Academy Award on the resume, personal lives seem to face dire consequences. The Oscar love curse spares no one! The so-called ‘Oscar love curse’ is a rather superstitious belief that once an actress wins an Oscar for Best Actress in a Lead or Supporting role, problems will follow in their love lives. While we’re on the fence about this one, numbers don’t lie. Almost 43 actresses who bagged the Best Actress Oscar separated from their significant other within a couple of years. This is also the case for some who snagged the Best Supporting Actress award. Curious about who these stars are? Read on to find out!
Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon
Actors Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins met on the sets of the 1988 romantic comedy Bull Durham. The couple was very public about their idea of being together and wanted to refrain from the traditional concept of marriage. Their blissful happiness only lasted for around 23 years, and the pair split up in 2009. This announcement came many many years after Sarandon won the Best Actress Award for Dead Man Walking in 1996.

When asked about the breakup, Sarandon mentioned that starring in the Broadway show Exit the King was what led her to make this decision. The show and her role made her question her mortality and even pushed her to question her relationship with Robbins. The couple has two sons together. Both eventually went on to date and marry other people. So, irrespective of if we’re crying by the bucket, if the two of them are happy, so are we!

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron bagged the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 2003 biological crime drama Monster. The actress nailed the role as the serial killer Aileen Wuornos. What made the movie so great was the uncanny resemblance between her and real-life Aileen. While receiving the award Charlize was dating Irish actor Stuart Townsend. The pair dated on and off for almost eight years before they split up in 2009.

Theron has continued to achieve new heights of success in terms of her career. She was also nominated for two more Oscars under the Best Actress category, in 2006 and in 2020. In 2006, she was nominated for her role in North Country and in 2020 for Bombshell. Over her long career, Theron has had almost 70 nominations for her exceptional work. After her split with Townsend, the actress went on to date superstar Sean Penn. The pair were together until 2015.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts has stolen more hearts than we can count with her dazzling smile and exceptional acting skills. So it seems about right that she was nominated for and even bagged the 2001 Best Actress Academy Award for the role of legal clerk in Erin Brockovich. Unfortunately, within a few months of receiving this award, the actress separated from her then-boyfriend Benjamin Bratt. The pair met each other in a restaurant back in 1997 and it was like love at first sight for Roberts.

The duo was seeing each other for almost four years before they called it quits in 2001. While the reasons behind this were unknown, some think it may have something to do with the Oscar love curse. Others think it was caused due to their hectic schedules. Roberts then went on to marry Daniel Moder in 2002. The pair are still together. Bratt also went on to marry Talisa Soto.

Brie Larson

Taking home the 2016 Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Room was our very own Captain Marvel Brie Larson. The super-talented actress was then dating musician and Phantom Planet frontman Alex Greenwald. The couple was rumored to have met through the guitarist of the band. The pair started seeing each other in 2013, and were even engaged for approximately three years before they called it quits in 2019. They were extremely private about their relationship, which is why there is not much to know about why they split. Sources close to them mentioned that while they were taking a break from their engagement, they continued to stay close. The same year, Larson played the role of Captain Marvel in the 2019 mega-blockbuster superhero film Avengers: Endgame, which brought her to international fame. The actress has a slew of critically acclaimed films that include Fantastic Fungi, Between Two Ferns, and Unicorn Store.
Geena Davis

Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum were a couple who could make all eyes in the room turn. But unfortunately for them, their love didn’t last long. The award-winning duo separated after the actress took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in The Accidental Tourist. Although “GQ” may have called them Hollywood’s Most Adorable Couple, they were really not meant to be.

The two first met on the sets of the horror flick Transylvania 6-5000 back in 1985. While their love was ‘attraction at first sight,’ it takes a lot more to keep a marriage going. Theirs lasted for only three years before they split in 1990. While there are many speculations about the real reason for the divorce, we don’t know the actual cause for their split. Most believe it may just be a result of the Oscar love curse, we will never know!

Emma Thompson

While Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh may have been considered a golden couple, it was clearly not meant to be. The pair met while shooting for the 1987 miniseries Fortunes of War and began dating soon after. They got hitched two years later in London and starred alongside each other in many movies and shows such as Much Ado About Nothing and Dead Again. But unfortunately, this marriage was not going to last.

In 1993, Emma Thomspon took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Howards End. Could the Oscar love curse have been the reason for their separation or was it the cheating scandals that took the British tabloids by storm? Despite all of this, her career has never faltered and we’re glad that a talented actress like her is still making movies that leave a mark on the audience.

Angelina Jolie

Does the Oscar love curse apply to those who’ve won under the Best Supporting Actress category? While the jury is still out on this one, the Internet definitely seems to think so. Back in 2000, Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie bagged the award for her supporting role in the 1999 iconic movie Girl, Interrupted. Billy Bob Thornton and Jolie divorced soon after in 2003. They met on the sets of the 1999 film Pushing Tin and apparently had an instant connection. The two quickly tied the knot with a swift wedding in May 2000. But even their marriage was not without controversy. This could be attributed to the fact that Thornton was actually engaged to Academy Award-winning actress Laura Dern at the time. Jolie and Thornton, who had a 20-year age gap, also made headlines for a lot of weird reasons that included wearing vials of each other’s blood and buying each other ‘his and her’ grave plots.
Helen Hunt

Since we’re already on the topic of whirlwind romances, let’s talk about actors Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria. The pair started dating all the way back in 1994 when they appeared together on the American sitcom Mad About You. The two dated for quite a long time before they tied the knot in 1999 in a Jewish ceremony. While nobody knows what went wrong with the happy couple, they apparently separated within 17 months of being married. The Internet, of course, thinks that this was the outcome of Hunt’s 1998 Best Actress Oscar win for her role in the 1997 romantic comedy As Good as It Gets. Their divorce was filed due to irreconcilable differences and was finalized in December 2000. The actress soon moved on and started dating producer Matthew Carnahan in 2001. The actress was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Sessions.
Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson is another superstar who was hit by the Oscar love curse. Hudson had been dating her high-school sweetheart James Payton since 1999. But the couple called it quits soon after she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie White in the 2006 hit Dreamgirls. Call it the Oscar love curse, but most of the sources attribute this separation to her increase in stardom and successful career.

While there were rumors of them getting back together after merely a month of separation, the couple eventually broke up for good. Hudson eventually married David Otunga who she also met in 2007. The couple was together for 10 years and have a son together. Hudson who is a singer, actor, musician, and artist has had a long career despite her difficult personal life. As of 2020, her net worth is a whopping $25 million.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon, most loved for her role as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, has given us some outstanding performances in her long career as an actor. But let’s be honest, even superstars are not immune to the clutches of the Oscar love curse. That being said, her divorce from fellow actor Ryan Phillippe came right after her big Oscar win for her role in Walk the Line. The couple who met at Witherspoon’s 1998 birthday party had a whirlwind romance and got hitched soon after. But the romance fizzled out in 2006, just a year after her winning an Oscar.

Why did this happen? Witherspoon and Phillippe both admitted that it could have resulted from getting married at such a young age. They also mentioned that being in the spotlight due to their high-profile careers in Hollywood had nothing to do with the split. The actress has had some iconic roles ever since, bringing her a lot of critical acclaim, and is now married to Jim Toth.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry
Halle Berry is one of the few actresses who have won both an Oscar and a Razzie. She’s also the first and only woman of color to have won an Oscar for Best Actress. Unfortunately, her win at the Oscars for her role in the 2001 film Monster’s Ball was followed by the apparent Oscar love curse as her marriage to R&B singer-songwriter Eric Benét ended in 2003. The couple met in 1997 while attending a concert at Los Angeles’ House of Blues.

Unlike many other romances on this list, the couple did not hit it off immediately. Instead, they found love in each other after they had been exchanging emails for almost a year. Berry and Benét got engaged and tied the knot in January 2001. After her Oscar win, rumors of Benét being unfaithful started making headlines. The couple stuck together through these trying times but ended up finalizing their divorce in 2005.

Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger
American actress and former supermodel Kim Basinger is known for her dazzling beauty and acting chops. Basinger met Alec Baldwin on the sets of The Marrying Man in 1991. The pair tied the knot in 1993 and were together until 2000; this being her second marriage. The separation came right after her 1998 Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for L.A. Confidential. While they were married, their relationship seemed truly romantic, which is why their divorce seemed rather shocking.

Close sources and family friends apparently saw this coming from a mile away. Before she hit the big screen, Basinger had a successful modeling career in New York. She began her acting career with a guest role in the TV series Gemini Man and went on to star as the Bond girl opposite Sean Connery in Never Say Never Again that was released in 1983.

Julie Andrews

Imagine being Mary Poppins with all the magic in the world and still not being safe from the Oscar love curse! Julie Andrews married set designer Tony Walton in 1959. They apparently knew each other since they were kids. But the couple got divorced in 1967. While the reasons for their separation still remain unknown, many consider the cause to be her 1965 Best Actress Oscar win for her role in the very iconic and memorable Mary Poppins.

While she was succeeding on the career front and taking on movies such as The Sound of Music, her personal life was taking a hit. Andrews then followed a singing career, but even that took a setback after her voice became hoarse due to surgery. She has also lent her voice in movies like Shrek Forever After and Despicable Me. Now, here’s a woman who doesn’t give up in the face of adversity!

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda
Grace and Frankie star Jane Fonda continues to steal hearts and deliver iconic lines even after all these years! A role model for girls and guys across the globe, Fonda has had her fair share of troubles. This includes her marriage and eventual separation from her first husband, Roger Vadim. Jane, who was 10 years younger than the then 37-year-old Vadim, was always afraid of losing the man she loved.

This meant she more often than not put up with his affairs, paid off all his debts, and even subjected herself to an open marriage. But all this came to a tumultuous end when the actress went on air to mention that she was thinking of getting a divorce. She was done playing the passive wife. This decision came just a year after she had won the Academy Award for her role in the 1971 film Klute.

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet
Titanic star Kate Winslet is one of the many megastars who fell prey to the Oscar love curse. In 2009, the actress took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 2008 romantic drama film The Reader. What came as a shock next was her split with Oscar-winning director and husband, Sam Mendes. Since they were not a typical show business couple, very little is known about their married life. They met in 2001 and got married secretly two years later while on holiday in Anguilla.

While some rumors suggest cheating, some attribute the divorce to Winslet’s close friend, Leonardo DiCaprio, and some simply think of it as the seven-year itch. Winslet found love again when she married her third husband, Edward Abel Smith, in 2012. The couple is still together. Winslet has a slew of critically acclaimed works on her resume. Her more recent works include Blackbird, Black Beauty, and Ammonite.

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank
Hilary Swank is no stranger to the Oscar love curse. But she may not fit the bill entirely. Why? Well, because Swank and Lowe’s marriage seemed to survive her Oscar Best Actress win for her role in the 1999 romance and drama flick Boys Don’t Cry. Unfortunately, what the marriage didn’t survive was her Best Actress Academy Award win for her role in the 2004 release Million Dollar Baby. Does this count as part of the Oscar love curse? The Internet definitely seems to think so.

The couple met in 1992 at a party that she attended with her Growing Pains co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. They dated each other for five years before tying the knot in 1997. But after nearly nine years of marital bliss, they called it quits in 2006. In 2018, the actress married social venture entrepreneur Philip Schneider in a private ceremony. The couple had been engaged for two years before they tied the knot.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2009 for her winning performance in The Blind Side. Unfortunately, soon after, numerous cheating scandals of Jesse James broke out. The American entrepreneur admitted to these allegations. The couple filed for a quick divorce and separated in 2010. What made this news even sadder is the fact that Bullock and James were in the process of adopting their second child together.

Bullock’s acting stint began with a small role in the thriller Hangmen, and ever since, she has achieved critical acclaim for various roles that she has aced. Her most notable movies have been Gravity, Bird Box, Speed, Miss Congeniality, and The Proposal. The veteran actress has also received multiple nominations for her top-notch acting. She played the lead role in the 2018 movie Ocean’s 8 that had an all-female cast.
